Produces 1.2million tonnes per annum. The Ilo Complex comprises the world's sixth largest copper smelter and the eighth largest copper refinery; a precious metal refinery and a sulphuric acid plant.

PROJECT SCOPE:

Upgrade of existing 1.2 million tpa copper smelter. Upgrade based around installation of ISASMELT™ smelter from Xstrata Technology in Australia.

MIPAC SCOPE:

Detailed instrumentation and process control design for the ISASMELT™ and Rotary Holding furnaces Control system configuration of ISASMELT™, Rotary Holding furnaces and Waste Heat Boiler Commissioning assistance and training

TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS:

Centralised smelter control room Use of fieldbus technology for field instrumentation. Automatic bath temperature control of ISASMELT™ furnace. Design and commissioning to be achieved with low or no impact on existing smelter operations.

RESULTS

The new plant has surpassed the Peruvian Environmental Agency’s emission requirements and SCC management is very happy with the project outcomes. Additionally, SCC will realise increases in productivity, improvements in production quality and a general growth in profit margins.
