From the desk of Eddie DeRivera

Eddie DeRivera - Editor MIPAC There has been much talk this year about the negative effects of the Global Financial Crisis on business. Given the economic climate, it is with great delight that I am able to share the good news that MIPAC has secured two major process control projects in Australia, added two new solutions to our portfolio (MIPAC Process Advantage™ & CellView®), all while maintaining a solid stream of services business internationally and in Australia. On top of this, my team has also won a prestigious Australian industry award.

While the Global Financial Crisis has presented challenges, the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme in 2010 and a strong global focus on reduction in energy use and carbon emissions will present even greater hurdles. MIPAC's process control solutions can be implemented and designed to help your operation reach or exceed energy reduction goals. Talk to us about how we can help you prepare your business to address any new government regulations – or simply to cut your energy costs or improve efficiency!

On behalf of everyone at MIPAC, I wish you and your families a happy and safe holiday season, and bright start to 2010. Enjoy the articles below.

MIPAC delivers engineering and control system strategies for Waste Water Treatment Facility

MIPAC has been commissioned to deliver engineering and control strategies as part of a major upgrade to a Waste Water Treatment facility. MIPAC was selected, against very tough competition, by PSG Richard Flanagan to provide the DCS configuration and commissioning services. MIPAC was selected for our expert team, flexibility and our ability to provide customers with on-going support and commitment.

The upgrade will increase the capacity of the facility to 30.8 Mega litres per day to meet the increasing needs of the regional shire's growing population.

MIPAC's role is important in ensuring quality and environmental standards are achieved and maintained at all stages of the treatment process.
The facility adheres to strict environmental and quality standards; MIPAC's control strategies will help the facility meet all standards required.

Successfully delivering Process Control to the Isa for over 12 years
Successfully delivering Process ControlThe Mining the Isa conference, held in November, provided the opportunity for MIPAC to acknowledge and celebrate its shared history with the mining town. MIPAC's history with Mount Isa spans almost thirty years, with the members of the Mount Isa Instruments Services group forming MIPAC in 1997. Most recently our work at Mount Isa was recognised by both the PACE and Australian Mining Prospect Awards. MIPAC Process Advantage™ was implemented to improve operations at Xstrata Zinc by stabilising production - allowing the plant to operate closer to process constraints, increase feed rate and concentrate production.
MIPAC finalist in the 2009 Australian Mining Prospect awards

Australian Mining Prospect AwardsMIPAC was a finalist in the 6th Annual Australian Mining Prospect awards. MIPAC was honoured to achieve three finalist nominations in two categories.

  • Recent MIPAC Process Advantage™ work at Xstrata Zinc was nominated in both the Innovative Mining Solutions category and the Mineral Processing Plant of the Year category.
  • MIPAC's CellView® was nominated in the Innovative Mining Solutions category.

Improve LME Grade Metal Recovery & Reduce Energy Use in Copper Refineries

CellView® from MIPAC is the industry's latest technology for the wireless monitoring of cell condition in electro-refining or electro-winning operations.   Less costly than hard-wired options, CellView® improves current efficiency and enables optimum production, safety, quality and environmental standards in a tankhouse.

»Try the online CellView® calculator«

Calculate the economic benefit for your refinery by using CellView® to monitor cell condition in your tankhouse.  CellView® will help to increase current efficiency, reduce the need for remelt, decrease energy costs and improve the quality and consistency of metal production.  Check out how it could help your operation - click here.
SAG mill stability

'Evolution of Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill Control at Century Zinc'The recent AusIMM Mill Operators Conference saw MIPAC present a paper, co-authored with the team at MMG Ltd's Century Mine. The paper, 'Evolution of Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill Control at Century Zinc', demonstrates the results of effectively implementing solutions from the MIPAC Process Advantage™ suite.

'Evolution of Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill Control at Century Zinc'
A.Thornton, A.Prinsloo, & R.Tewu

ABSTRACT

Automatic control of SAG mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (the world's second-largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high-quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple-output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95% of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

MOVEMBER at MIPAC - Support our Team! This November several MIPACIANS are taking part in the Movember challenge by putting down their razors for the month, to raise money and awareness for men's health. About 3,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in Australia and one in eight men will experience depression in their lifetime, many of whom don't seek help.

To sponsor MIPAC Mo's, you can either:

* Visit: http://au.movember.com/mospace/4666/ and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account

* Write a cheque payable to "Movember Foundation", referencing our Registration Number 4666 and mailing it to: Movember Foundation, PO Box 292, Prahran, VIC, 3181

Movember is now in its sixth year and, to date, has achieved some pretty amazing results by working alongside The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCFA) and beyondblue : the national depression initiative. Check out further details at: http://au.movemberfoundation.com/research-and-programs.
